What Is CuSn5Zn5Pb5?
CuSn5Zn5Pb5, widely known as RG5 or gunmetal, is a copper-based cast alloy containing tin, zinc and lead. Its EN 1982 cast-product designation is CuSn5Zn5Pb5-C, material number CC491K. Tin contributes strength and wear behaviour, zinc assists castability, and lead improves machinability, conformability and the ability to embed small foreign particles.
Chemical Composition
Under EN 1982, the total Cu + Ni content is 83.0-87.0%, while Sn, Zn and Pb are each 4.0-6.0%. Maximum limits are 2.0% Ni, 0.30% Fe, 0.10% P and S, 0.25% Sb, and 0.01% each Al and Si. The principal value in the standard is Cu + Ni, not Cu alone. Detailed values are shown in Section 01, Chemical Composition.
Mechanical and Typical Physical Properties
EN 1982 minimum values are: sand casting (GS), Rm 200 MPa, Rp0.2 90 MPa, A 13% and 60 HBW; permanent-mould casting (GM), 220 MPa, 110 MPa, 6% and 65 HBW; centrifugal casting (GZ), 250 MPa, 110 MPa, 13% and 65 HBW; continuous casting (GC), 250 MPa, 110 MPa, 13% and 65 HBW. Values must be evaluated separately by casting process.
Typical values are approximately 8.8 g/cm³ density, 0.373 J/(g·K) specific heat, 18.2 × 10⁻⁶/K thermal expansion, 71 W/(m·K) thermal conductivity and 8.5 MS/m electrical conductivity. These physical properties are typical references, not guaranteed values.
Properties and Applications
CuSn5Zn5Pb5 combines good castability and machinability with suitable corrosion behaviour and conformability in sliding contact. Applications include pump housings and impellers, valve bodies, fittings and industrial pipe connections, lightly to moderately loaded plain bearings, bronze bushings, small gears, hydraulic and pneumatic components, guides and wear plates.
The lead content does not make the alloy inherently self-lubricating; load, speed, counterface, clearance, temperature and lubrication must be evaluated together. For contact with drinking water, the alloy name alone is insufficient: applicable regulations, permitted lead release and required product approvals must be verified separately.
Production and Supply Forms
KUPTİN® R5 can be made by sand, permanent-mould, centrifugal, continuous and project-specific casting. The process is selected according to product form, dimensions, geometry, required mechanical properties, service conditions and the order specification.
The alloy can be supplied as round bar, bronze bushing, tube, hollow or solid part, ring, flat bar, plate and special casting to drawing. Final dimensions, tolerances and machining allowances should be reviewed before ordering.
Standards and Comparable Grades
The principal European cast-product designation is CuSn5Zn5Pb5-C / CC491K under EN 1982. CuSn5Zn5Pb5-B / CB491K is the related ingot designation and must not be used as if it were the cast-product grade. Former DIN designations are G-CuSn5ZnPb / 2.1096.01 for castings and GB-CuSn5ZnPb / 2.1097 for ingots.
UNS C83600, SAE 40, BS 1400 LG2, AS 1565 C83600A, JIS CAC406/CAC406C and PN B555 are comparable designations; they must not automatically be treated as exact equivalents because chemical and mechanical limits can differ. ISO 1338:1977 CuPb5Sn5Zn5 is a historical withdrawn designation.
ASTM B505/B505M covers continuous-cast products, ASTM B271/B271M centrifugal castings, ASTM B584 general copper-alloy castings and ASTM B62 valve, flange and fitting castings. They are product specifications, not alloy names; the applicable UNS grade, product form and delivery conditions must be stated in the order.
Technical Note
Chemical composition and mechanical properties must be verified against the selected standard, casting process and delivery condition. Physical values stated here are typical references. Final product properties must be confirmed by the order specification, section size, dimensions, tolerances, product analysis certificate and quality-control results.
