What Is CuSn12?
CuSn12 is a copper-based cast alloy containing 11-13% tin and designated as CuSn12-C / CC483K under EN 1982. Its high tin content contributes hardness, wear resistance and resistance to high surface pressures.
Under comparable production conditions, it generally provides higher hardness and wear resistance than CuSn10 but lower elongation. Actual mechanical behaviour depends on the casting process, section size, production conditions and material structure.
Chemical Composition
Under EN 1982:2024, CuSn12-C / CC483K contains 85.5-88.5% Cu and 11.0-13.0% Sn, with Ni limited to 2.0%. Further maximum limits are 0.6% P, 0.7% Pb, 0.5% Zn, 0.2% Fe and Mn, 0.15% Sb, 0.05% S, and 0.01% Al and Si. Copper and nickel are assessed separately; the copper range is not expressed as combined Cu + Ni. Detailed values are provided in section 01, Chemical Composition.
Typical Physical Properties
Typical values for CuSn12 are approximately 8.72 g/cm³ density, 55 W/(m·K) thermal conductivity and 19 × 10⁻⁶/K thermal expansion. These are reference values and may vary with the production process, casting structure, temperature and test conditions.
Properties and Applications
CuSn12 is distinguished by high hardness, wear resistance, suitable sliding behaviour and heavy-load capacity. With the correct counterface, operating clearance and lubrication, it provides reliable performance in applications involving heavy loads and low sliding speeds.
Principal applications include heavy-duty plain bearings, bronze bushings, worm wheels, helical gears, spindle nuts, coupling components, slideways, wear plates, piston-pin bushings, pumps, valves and hydraulic-system components.
The alloy should not be assumed to operate without lubrication in every application. Lubricant selection must be evaluated together with counterface hardness, surface finish, operating clearance, load, speed and service temperature.
Production and Supply Forms
KUPTİN® 12 can be produced by centrifugal casting, continuous casting and project-specific casting. The production method is selected according to product form, dimensions, part geometry, service conditions and the order specification.
The alloy can be supplied as round bar, flat bar, plate, solid or hollow section, tube and castings made to technical drawings. Final dimensions, tolerances and machining allowances should be evaluated before ordering.
Standards and Comparable Grades
The primary European designation for CuSn12 cast products is CuSn12-C / CC483K under EN 1982. CuSn12-B / CB483K is the related ingot designation and must not be used as though it were the casting product grade.
The former DIN designation is G-CuSn12 / 2.1052.01. BS 1400 PB2 is a former comparable British designation. UNS C90800 may be used as a comparable US grade, but it is not a direct equivalent because its composition limits differ. ASTM B505/B505M is not an alloy designation; it is a product specification for continuous cast copper alloys.
