What Is CuSn11Pb2?

CuSn11Pb2 is a leaded tin-bronze casting alloy. Its EN 1982 cast-product designation is CuSn11Pb2-C and its material number is CC482K. The high tin content contributes strength and wear resistance, while lead improves sliding behaviour, emergency-running properties and machinability.

Chemical Composition

Under EN 1982, Cu is 83.5-87.0%, Sn 10.5-12.5% and Pb 0.7-2.5%. Maximum limits are 2.0% each for Ni and Zn, 0.40% P, 0.20% each Fe, Mn and Sb, 0.08% S, and 0.01% each Al and Si. Copper and nickel must be shown as separate elements. Detailed values are provided in Section 01, Chemical Composition.

Mechanical and Typical Physical Properties

EN 1982 minimum values are: sand casting (GS), Rm 240 MPa, Rp0.2 130 MPa, A 5% and 80 HBW; centrifugal casting (GZ) and continuous casting (GC), Rm 280 MPa, Rp0.2 150 MPa, A 5% and 90 HBW. Permanent-mould casting is possible, but the verified EN table does not provide separate GM minimums.

Typical values are approximately 8.7 g/cm³ density, an 830-1000 °C melting range, 51-55 W/(m·K) thermal conductivity, 5-7 MS/m electrical conductivity and 90-110 GPa modulus of elasticity. These are not guaranteed EN 1982 properties and can vary with production and measurement conditions.

Properties and Applications

CuSn11Pb2 combines high hardness, good wear resistance, good sliding properties, tolerance of impact loading, suitable machinability and good corrosion behaviour in many environments including seawater. Applications include plain bearings exposed to high peak loads, crank and toggle bearings, piston-pin bushings, spindle bearings, press flywheel bearings, crane-wheel bushings, heavily loaded slideways, ship propeller-shaft bushings and hydraulic-machine components.

The lead content does not make the alloy inherently self-lubricating or maintenance-free. Despite its favourable emergency-running behaviour, lubrication must be assessed together with load, speed, counterface, clearance and temperature. For drinking-water contact, applicable regulations, lead-release limits and product approvals must be verified separately.

Production and Supply Forms

KUPTİN® PB can be produced by sand, centrifugal and continuous casting; permanent-mould and shell-mould casting may also be used subject to project conditions. The alloy is not suitable for pressure die casting. The process is selected according to product form, dimensions, geometry, mechanical requirements and the order specification.

The alloy can be supplied as round bar, bronze bushing, tube, hollow or solid component, ring, flat bar, plate and special casting to drawing. Final dimensions, tolerances and machining allowances should be reviewed before ordering.

Standards and Comparable Grades

The principal European cast-product designation is CuSn11Pb2-C / CC482K under EN 1982. CuSn11Pb2-B / CB482K is the related ingot designation. Former DIN 1705 designations are G-CuSn12Pb / 2.1061.01, GZ-CuSn12Pb / 2.1061.03 for centrifugal casting and GC-CuSn12Pb / 2.1061.04 for continuous casting.

UNS C92500 is an approximate US comparison, not an exact equivalent because its chemical limits differ. BS 1400 PB4 is only a historical comparison. CuSn12Pb2 under ISO 1338:1977 is historical and the standard has been withdrawn. C92700, C90800 and C93800 have been excluded from the verified main cross-reference table.

Technical Note

EN 1982:2024 is the current principal standard. Mechanical properties are minimum references for the relevant casting process. Continuous-cast sections, particularly above 300 mm, require separate assessment against the order requirements and test report. Final product properties must be confirmed by the casting process, section size, dimensions, tolerances, product analysis certificate and quality-control results.
