What Is CuSn14?

CuSn14 is a copper-based, high-tin cast bronze containing approximately 13-15% tin. Under the current EN 1982:2024 standard, it is designated CuSn14-C / CC486K for cast products and CuSn14-B / CB486K for the related ingot.

The high tin content contributes to hardness, wear resistance and performance under high surface pressures. Under comparable production conditions, it can provide greater hardness and wear resistance than lower-tin bronzes, while ductility and impact-load capacity may be more limited.

Chemical Composition

The CuSn14 product composition used on this page contains 85.0-87.0% Cu and 13.0-15.0% Sn. Maximum values are shown as 0.5% Pb, 0.5% Zn, 2.0% Ni, 0.20% Fe and 0.01% Al. These values represent the technical product references used for this grade rather than the complete normative element table of EN 1982:2024. Final chemical compliance must be verified against the product analysis certificate and the order specification.

Mechanical and Typical Physical Properties

Publicly accessible general minimum references for CuSn14-C are 200 MPa tensile strength, 3% elongation and 85 HBW Brinell hardness. Typical density is approximately 8.7-8.8 g/cm³. Because mechanical properties depend on the casting process, section size, specimen condition and production parameters, these values must not be treated as a single guaranteed range for every product form.

Properties and Applications

CuSn14 is distinguished by high hardness, wear resistance, compressive-load capacity and suitable sliding behaviour under correctly designed service conditions. It can be used in bearing and power-transmission applications involving heavy loads and low sliding speeds.

Principal applications include heavy-duty plain bearings, bronze bushings, shaft bearings, worm gears, travelling nuts, slideways, wear plates, piston rings, pump components, valve bodies, hydraulic and compressor components, and marine equipment.

The alloy should not be assumed to operate without lubrication or at high speed in every application. Lubricant selection must be evaluated together with counterface hardness, surface finish, operating clearance, load, speed, temperature and environmental conditions.

Production and Supply Forms

KUPTİN® 14 can be produced by centrifugal casting, continuous casting and project-specific casting. The process is selected according to product form, dimensions, part geometry, service conditions and the order specification.

The alloy can be supplied as round bar, bronze bushing, tube, solid or hollow section, flat bar, plate, ring, special section and castings made to technical drawings. Final dimensions, tolerances and machining allowances should be evaluated before ordering.

Standards and Comparable Grades

The primary European designation for CuSn14 cast products is CuSn14-C / CC486K under EN 1982:2024. CuSn14-B / CB486K is the related ingot designation and must not be used as though it were the casting product grade.

The former DIN comparative designation is G-CuSn14 / 2.1054. GBz14 appears in some historical commercial tables but is not a current EN grade designation. UNS C91000 is a comparable US grade, but it is not a direct equivalent because its composition limits differ. ASTM B505/B505M is not an alloy designation; it is a product specification for continuous cast copper alloys.

Proof strength Rp0.2 and process-specific mechanical requirements must be established at the ordering stage.
