CuSn10Pb10 | KUPTİN® PB10 | High-Leaded Tin Bronze

KUPTİN® PB10 (CuSn10Pb10-C / CC495K) is a leaded tin bronze combining good sliding behaviour, wear resistance and excellent machinability. It is used for bronze bushings, plain bearings, thrust washers and industrial bearing components where correct design and lubrication are provided and tolerance to brief lubrication deficiency is required.

What Is CuSn10Pb10?

CuSn10Pb10 is a high-leaded tin bronze designated CuSn10Pb10-C / CC495K for castings under EN 1982. Approximately 10% tin supports strength and wear behaviour, while approximately 10% lead improves machinability, conformability and resistance to seizure.

Chemical Composition

For CC495K castings, copper including nickel is 78.0-82.0%, tin 9.0-11.0% and lead 8.0-11.0%. Zinc and nickel are limited to 2.0% max.; iron 0.25%; manganese 0.20%; phosphorus and sulfur 0.10%; antimony 0.50%; and aluminium and silicon 0.01% max. These limits must not be used as an ingot certificate for CB495K because small differences may exist between ingot and casting compositions.

Mechanical Properties

According to EN 1982 minimums, tensile strength is at least 180 MPa for sand casting and 220 MPa for permanent mould, centrifugal and continuous casting. Rp0.2 is at least 80 MPa for sand casting and 110 MPa for the other three processes. Minimum elongation is 8% for GS, 3% for GM, 6% for GZ and 8% for GC; minimum hardness is 60, 65, 70 and 70 HBW respectively. Values relate to standard test specimens, and actual components can vary with section and casting structure.

Typical Physical Properties

Typical density is approximately 9.0 g/cm³. ISO 4382-1 gives approximately 90 GPa elastic modulus, 18 × 10⁻⁶/K thermal expansion and 47 W/(m·K) thermal conductivity for its bearing alloy. Manufacturer datasets may give values such as 54 W/(m·K), 0.376 J/(g·K) specific heat and 6 MS/m electrical conductivity. These are typical references, not guaranteed EN 1982 values.

Properties and Applications

CuSn10Pb10 provides good sliding behaviour, wear resistance, seizure resistance, conformability and excellent machinability. Typical applications include bronze bushings, plain bearings, thrust washers, guide bushes, wear plates, pump bearings, rolling-mill guides and thick-walled or bimetal bearing layers.

The lead phase can improve tolerance to short or intermittent lubrication deficiency, but the alloy should not be described generally as maintenance-free or suitable for oil-free operation. Lubrication, shaft hardness, surface finish, speed and pressure must be assessed together.

Production and Supply Forms

EN 1982 permits sand (GS), permanent mould (GM), centrifugal (GZ) and continuous casting (GC). Products may be supplied as hollow bronze bars and tubes, solid round bars, flats, plates, bushings and project-specific bronze castings. Mechanical properties should be stated for the selected casting process.

Standards and Comparable Grades

The principal European grade is CuSn10Pb10-C / CC495K, with CuSn10Pb10-B / CB495K as the related ingot grade. Former German casting grades under DIN 1716 are G-CuPb10Sn / 2.1176.01, GZ-CuPb10Sn / 2.1176.03 and GC-CuPb10Sn / 2.1176.04. Number 2.1177 belongs to the former GB-CuPb10Sn ingot grade under DIN 17656.

C93700 is a UNS alloy number, not an ASTM grade name. ASTM B505/B505M covers continuous-cast products, ASTM B271/B271M centrifugal castings and ASTM B584 sand castings. UNS C93700 / SAE 64 and BS 1400 LB2 are close historical comparisons and are not exact equivalents.

CuPb10Sn10 in ISO 4382-1:2021 is an application designation for solid and multilayer thick-walled plain bearings. Its phosphorus limit and some mechanical minimums differ from CC495K, so it should not be presented as a general EN equivalent.

Technical and Regulatory Note

The alloy contains 8-11% lead. Suitability for drinking water, food contact or regulated applications must not be claimed from the alloy name alone; the applicable product standard, certification and lead-release requirements must be checked.
